International Humanitarian Law
A body of international law based on both treaties and customary law. They constitute the rules that apply in situations or armed conflict and that aim to limit the suffering and damage caused by armed conflict situations. They do so by:
- protecting persons who are not, or who are no longer, taking part in hostilities
- protecting particular objects
- restricting the methods and the means of warfare
