A french term that literally means "out of combat".
Under international humanitarian law it refers to all those combatants that are not or no longer taking part in the hostilities as a result of, for instance: laying down their weapons, surrender, them being sick, shipwrecked, leaving a disabled aircraft, wounded, detained or disabled. They enjoy special protection under the Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols.
